FASHION FUTURES: COLLECTING FOR ARCHIVES AND SOURCES OF INSPIRATION

WHAT BUYERS REALLY WANT: HAVE YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES?

The design process is about creativity, influence and inspiration.  This workshop examines the practice of archiving, preserving and presenting as an essential part of the process.  How can a designer's own efforts, collected in a private archive, function as a solid foundation upon which to build a successful collection and fashion career?  An archive can reveal a designer's strength (and weakness) and ultimately act as a testament to their talent.  This workshop is a must!

This seminar will explore the challenge faced by designers of balancing creativity with commercial viability.  What makes a designer catch a buyer's eye?  How much does creativity factor into their decisions? Issues such as understanding your market and clientele, establishing efficient production power, maintaining a point of view for the label and creating cohesive collectives are all integral components for commercial success.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE: HOW MUSIC INFLUENCES FASHION

A CAREER IN COSTUME: FROM DESIGN TO PERFORMANCE

In recent times, music has grown in influence in our society to the extent that it has started to provide us with a new way of identifying ourselves, as well as merely entertaining us. Artists are not only giving us music to identify who we are, they are also giving us a look and a style as well. This seminar will explore the relationship between music and fashion, as well as the significant power of music and the role of the artist in influencing what we wear. As more and more artists launch their own clothing lines, we ask the question, what is the future of the convergence of music and fashion?

Going to the opera is always a spectacle; the cinema or watching television is less so! Costume design is an important part of any theatre, film or television production and this masterclass will provide you with a unique insight into the world of the costume designer. You will gain an understanding of the skills, knowledge, personal attributes and resourcefulness needed to carve out a career in costume design. This masterclass is lead by Fay Fullerton who is the Head of Costume at the Royal Opera House and the recipient of K2C’s 2007 Trailblazer Award.

SUPPORTING THE FASHION AND CLOTHING SECTOR: LONDON APPAREL

SHOPPING FOR VINTAGE

London Apparel is a nationally recognised dedicated clothing and apparel skills and resource support centre at Florentia Clothing Village in Haringey. It is an innovative new centre that offers designers, manufacturers and retailers a combination of facilities and support to cover all aspects of the fashion business.

This seminar provides an opportunity for attendees to learn about London Apparel’s art facilities and on-site services that are designed to help those with talent, ideas and ambition. Welcome to a new era of manufacturing where pattern making, garment costing and sampling are all possible within one unique organisation - from concept to catwalk!

Vintage clothing provides a fantastic opportunity to wear beautifully made garments that are totally individual, as well as a small piece of history. It was only a few years ago that wearing vintage clothing was strictly for fancy dress parties and yet today the sartorial trends could not be more different. Vintage fashion is now coveted all over the world, and style icons such as Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are regularly photographed wearing gorgeous clothes by designers whose heyday was decades ago. Contemporary designers are looking to the past for inspiration and translating long forgotten designs into modern pieces, whilst high street stores such as Top Shop, Oasis and Urban Outfitters stock vintage or vintage-inspired lines which make this look accessible to everyone. Whether as a wearer or collector of vintage fashion, this workshop provides all the information on how and where to buy vintage fashion. Led by the renowned fashion writer, Funmi Odulate, this workshop will show you how we can all own a little piece of fashion history.

BLOOD DIAMONDS: HOW CONSUMERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

CATWALK THE WORLD: FASHION FOR FOOD PROGRAMME

They say that 'diamonds are a girl's best friend', but what is the true cost?  Conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, are diamonds that have been used by rebel groups to fuel conflict and civil wars.  Approximately two-thirds of the world's supply of rough diamonds comes from Africa.  Money from the sale of these diamonds has funded brutal conflicts in Africa, resulting in the death and displacement of millions of people.  Is the diamond industry doing enough to fulfil the pledges it has made to eradicate blood diamonds from international trade?

This seminar will tell you all you need to know about the trade in conflict diamonds and the questions that you need to ask jewellery retailers to ensure that the diamonds that you buy are conflict free.  Diamonds are symbols of wealth, elegance and love around the world.  As a consumer, you can make a difference.

Founded in 2006, ‘CatWALK The World’ is a United Nations World Food Programme initiative, which uses fashion and clothing as a vehicle for raising awareness of child hunger and raising funds for school feeding programmes around the globe. The aim of this seminar is to discuss how the appeal of fashion can be used to support, raise awareness of and achieve social justice objectives and humanitarian issues. ‘CatWALK The World’ will be used as the case study.
